Peer Advisor - CLA Career Services

Position Summary

CLA Career Services is the career services office for students in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA). We offer resources and services to help CLA students choose a major, search for internships, jobs and/or volunteer opportunities, revise their resume and cover letter, choose a career, apply to graduate/professional school, and prepare for opportunities post-graduation. Peer Advisors work in the resource room at CLA Career Services providing assistance to a diverse population of students, in all of the above areas, on a drop-in basis. Responsibilities

  • Critique resumes and cover letters, during drop-ins and via GoldPASS
  • Provide exceptional one-on-one support and encouragement to students visiting the resource room
  • Assist students exploring various majors within CLA
  • Present to small and large groups in the resource room as well as to groups across campus
  • Work collaboratively with fellow Peer Advisors and professional staff on projects
  • Perform light office cleaning and organization of the resource room and in support of events
  • Support career courses & course instructors with course grading and other responsibilities
  • Represent CLA Career Services at events
  • Consult with students on their own career development process and direct to resources, as needed
  • Support career counselors in curating career-related information to share with students via our 8 career fields
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure strong support for students with varying career needs



Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills, both written & verbal
  • Positive & proactive attitude with a willingness to learn
  • Demonstrated desire to provide strong customer service & desire to help others
  • Must be a CLA undergraduate student



Preferred Qualifications

  • Work-study eligibility highly preferred but not required
  • Previous customer service experience
  • Knowledge of the University and an ability to communicate available resources to students
  • Experience with public speaking
  • Ability to take initiative & be a role model
  • Desire to develop personally and professionally



Requirements of Employment

Peer Advisors work in the resource room approximately 10-14 hours a week during the normal office hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Active participation in bi-weekly, one-hour staff meetings is required. We will be hiring for 7-8 peer advisors starting in August 2021 for the 2021-22 academic year. The position pays $11.00/hour. Specific areas of interest include STEM, business, and international student status.

Register for a career course in Fall 2021, unless you have previously taken one of the following courses. The appropriate career course will be determined by a conversation between you and the peer supervisor, upon offer of employment. Course offerings include CLA 3002, 3101, 3201, 3205 (pre-law), and 3896. This mandatory requirement will aid in facilitating conversations in your role as a peer advisor as well as provide personal career preparation. You may take this course either A-F or S-N.
