CLA Employer Relations is a unit within CLA Career Services whose function is to connect CLA students and employers, for recruiting and career education purposes. This includes managing GoldPASS, planning career events such as the CLA Internship & Career Fair (which draws about 100 organizations and 1,000 CLA students), supporting employer engagement programming and employers’ on-campus recruiting efforts, and more.

The Employer Relations Assistant is a valued member of the Employer Relations team, whose work is essential to the team’s day-to-day operations. While hours are flexible to accommodate class schedules, the ERA must be available for a minimum of 15 hours per week in order to fulfill the responsibilities of the role. This role does not work directly with students, and includes both independent “computer-facing” project work and collaborative “people-facing” work (like trainings and presentations).

Responsibilities

GoldPASS powered by Handshake
The ERA will be the GoldPASS expert among CLA Career Services student staff. As the GoldPASS expert, the ERA will:
  • Review job postings and organizations’ requests for approval
  • Respond to GoldPASS questions from students, CLA Career Services full-time and student staff, and other CLA staff
  • Assist with the development and delivery of GoldPASS training and education, such as staff and student training sessions and development of educational materials (handouts, videos, etc.)
  • Create reports for CLA leadership to track information such as student engagement in GoldPASS, volume of opportunities (jobs, internships, etc.) over time, and more
  • Support marketing efforts to encourage CLA students to use GoldPASS

Data collection, analysis, and reporting
Much of the Employer Relations team’s work involves data collection. The ERA will be immediately involved in the collection, management, analysis and reporting of this data. Data-related tasks may include:
  • Collect and track attendance and assessment data from CLA career events such as the CLA Internship and Career Fair, Practice Interview Days, On-Campus Interviews, employer recruiting events (i.e. info sessions), site visits, etc.
  • Analyze event data and make recommendations for improvement
  • Create reports on data collection/analysis and assist the Employer Relations team in presenting reports to the larger CLA Career Services staff
  • Maintain various databases, adding new data and ensuring existing data is up-to-date

Event planning and management
The Employer Relations team is involved in the planning of numerous recruiting and career education events, and the ERA will contribute to the management and coordination of these events. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Support event planning efforts
  • Assisting with student and/or employer registration and/or sign-in
  • Preparing materials
  • Room set-up

Other need- and interest-based projects
  • Employer Relations Newsletter (ER News) — During the academic year, Employer Relations sends a weekly email newsletter to about 600 campus partners with information about upcoming career- and employer-related opportunities for students. The ERA:
  • Helps find, organize, and write content for the ER News
  • Manages the distribution list. This involves updating the list with new contacts, tracking contacts who have unsubscribed, and removing contacts who do not work at the University anymore.
  • Research — The ERA often conducts research on a variety of topics for the Employer Relations team. This may include, but is not limited to:
  • Researching organizations and employment opportunities for CLA students to support outreach to employers and/or to help full-time staff prepare for meetings with employers
  • Researching other liberal arts/Big10/etc. schools around various topics (for example, how are other schools using GoldPASS powered by Handshake?)
  • Attend team meetings (on an as needed or as available basis) to share reports, information/feedback from employers, etc.
